How do you come up with an idea like “Hard/Soft”? By keeping your eyes open and sensing what’s in the air. Or on the table. And thanks to the elaborate system of hard and software on the desktop, of course, you don’t even have to leave it. Although if winter gets any harder, and the beautiful but scary-looking cracks that are starting to form in the windows up here in the skies over Berlin get any bigger, that will be cold comfort. But this is what happens when two forces come up against one another. The best protection against the icy weather, of course, is a thick, soft fur coat but you can’t wear those anymore. You have to opt for fantasy fur, which is a great but not hugely appropriate name because it now looks so real that the sort of people who shout “animal killer” can’t tell the difference. There are worse things, though, that can happen on those hard old streets down there, such as ending up under the wheels of a car skidding on black ice. Car accidents are certainly all the rage in the art world right now. Could this have something to do with the recent Gagosian show in London that paid homage to JG Ballard’s novel Crash? Or perhaps because there’s really nothing more to be said about sex, even at its most hardcore, and the hunt for new thrills has begun? If you want a breakthrough, though, you must be prepared for things to get a little rough. Balthazar, the dwarf rabbit who came into the editorial office to look things over just before hard proofing, agrees.
